Planning a trip to Iceland is a beast. Trust us, we’ve traveled to Iceland 3 times, and have spent countless hours researching.

Hidden gems are hard to find if you don’t know where they are. On our first trip, we drove right past a ton of pretty epic spots because we didn’t know they existed.

This 7-9-day trip will bring you along Iceland’s majestic Southern Coast, and ends with time in the exciting city of Reykjavík. This itinerary is a healthy blend of adventure and a bit of luxury. This route brings you to some of the most iconic sights in Iceland as well as hidden gems. This is truly a bucket list trip!

There are so many things to do in Iceland that it can be hard to narrow it down yourself. We’ve only included experiences that we think are worthwhile in our itineraries so you can benefit from our experience and not spend your precious time at tourist traps that turn out to be way less exciting than promised.

We know that is not feasible for everyone, so we decided to take our experience and turn it into a totally affordable PDF guide that you can download to plan an epic trip! 

Iceland Itinerary FAQs

This is a perfect road trip route for anyone who has roughly one week in Iceland and wants to see the top sights as well as some little-known gems. This would make an amazing honeymoon or special trip.

The hotels, experiences and restaurants recommended are for those with a mid-range budget. 

While Iceland is a notoriously expensive country, we’ve done our best to keep costs reasonable. That said, this isn’t an itinerary for budget travelers.  

Each night of this itinerary has at least 3 hotel options to choose from. We’ve highlighted our top pick to make choosing easy. However, if the property is already booked for your dates, we’ve included more options as well.

Yes, you will need a vehicle in order to follow this itinerary. With very little public transportation, the best way to see Iceland is with a rental car or a campervan. We’ve set this up for those staying in hotels, as that would be our recommendation for a romantic honeymoon. 

However, if you are interested in renting a campervan, you can still follow this route and we have plenty of information in our Iceland Campervan Rental Guide.

You DO NOT need a 4×4 for this itinerary.

The itinerary includes various easy to moderate level hikes, but nothing too demanding or requiring extra gear. 

We’d only recommend this itinerary for those traveling during the summer months, as many places will be closed outside this season. Additionally, outside of the summer months, you won’t have enough hours of daylight to do as much exploring (meaning you’d arrive at many spots in the dark).
